Mash Tun

A Mash Tun is the vessel where hot water & crushed Malted Barley are mixed together, to produce a porridge type solution called the Mash, which sits in the Mash Tun for about an hour while the sugars are extracted from the malt.   This is called an 'infusion mash'.

Enzymes in the malt, convert starches into various brewing sugars. The sugary liquid produced called sweet wort is then slowly pumped to the Copper.
